Sometimes when you least expect it, you could be at a resort, a private party or in a downtown pub, you come across a form of entertainment that lures you in and continuously stirs you. Just when you think you’ve seen it all, Grant Leutschaft enters the room, one man, producing an incredible wall of live sound. Many people think they’re hearing a band or a CD player until their curiosity draws them closer to the stage. With an acoustic guitar, a foot-controlled rhythm section and a powerful baritone voice he takes the audience on a musical tour they will never forget, adding a handful of surprises and left turns. Spectators can’t help becoming part of the show, requesting their favorite music, some singing along, others dancing. One set could open with the ghostly sounds of Johnny Cash (complete with train whistle), progress to the complexity of the Dave Mathews Band and finish with an explosive dance floor favorite by the Gypsy Kings. You may also catch him displaying his creative side, performing original material from his self-produced CD release ‘Grant Leutschaft Volume I’, a rootsy collection of rock, blues, country, jazz and funk music. Often Grant adds other instruments to the performance, effortlessly moving from the piano, to the tenor saxophone, to the harmonica. No matter what age or walk of life, Grant Leutschaft will find a way to connect with every member of the crowd as he does time and time again.
In the town of Vermilion Bay Ontario, Grant’s life took a musical path at
an early age. His first success was first prize at a local talent show, singing
Elvis songs while strumming a twelve-string guitar, enormous in comparison
to this seven-year-old boy. By the age of thirteen he had purchased his first
electric guitar, which soon led to playing in bands. Through his high-school
years he also played saxophone and clarinet in the school band, while occasionally
gigging at socials, legions and nightclubs. After graduating (with a music
scholarship and MVP award) he took on music as a full time career. Choosing
Winnipeg as home base, he toured from Ontario to BC while honing his craft.
He has played with numerous bands in some of Winnipeg’s choice venues including
The Convention Center (Festival of Lights 2001), Club Regent Casino, Canada
Day 2000 at Assiniboine Park to a crowd of 30,000 as well as nightclubs like
Boogie Nights, The Palomino Club and Coyote’s. After thirteen years of steady
performing, Grant Leutschaft has grown into one of the finest entertainers
in the Winnipeg scene today and is well respected by his fans and his peers
in the industry.
